11 ports in Washington chosen for state-funded port electrification programme

The Washington State Department of Transportation has awarded a total of $26.5 million to 11 Washington ports.

The grant will be used to set up shore power facilities in these ports. These facilities will allow ships to switch off their onboard engines and connect to shore power facilities while docked.

Under the state-funded Port Electrification Grant Program,shore power facilities will be set up at the Washington ports of Seattle, Bellingham, Benton, Edmonds and Everett among others.

The grant will also be used to purchase electric vehicles for port operations.

The programme was created last year and aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from port operations.
