The project is being led by green hydrogen producer PuriFire Energy, which will develop hydrothermal systems capable of converting waste carbon and water or wastewater into green hydrogen and carbon dioxide. These outputs can then be synthesized into bio-methanol.

Partners in the initiative include Shoreham Port, Newcastle University, and UK technology organisation Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult.

The trial aims to prove the technology’s commercial readiness and support the broader adoption of bio-methanol as a low-emission marine fuel.

ABP also plans to use the project to better understand the logistics and bunkering of bio-methanol for large-scale use, including options for on-site production and end-user demand.
