ABS and KSOE to explore offshore green hydrogen plant

The floating production unit will use offshore wind power to make green hydrogen, according to classification society ABS. Green hydrogen can have zero emissions when it is produced through electrolysis of water, a process that splits water into hydrogen and oxygen molecules.

The floating platform will subsequently liquefy green hydrogen on board for easier transportation.

The other project parties include the Korea Institute of Energy Technology (KENTECH), HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) of the Hyundai Group, and Linde Korea, the Korean arm of industrial gas supplier Linde.

“The commercialisation of floating platforms for clean hydrogen production will increase Korea's energy independence and contribute to the clean energy transition,” says Baek-Suk Sung, the chief executive of Linde Korea.

It is unclear if this green hydrogen will find an outlet in the shipping sector.
