ABS approves Fleetzero’s modular battery system for marine applications

The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has issued a product design assessment (PDA) to US marine technology company Fleetzero for its modular battery energy storage system (BESS), which can be deployed across a range of vessel types.

A PDA is an evaluation of a product’s design, usability, functionality, and overall user experience.

The PDA confirms that ABS has reviewed the system’s design for marine use, supporting its deployment in future projects requiring class-verified battery technology.

Based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology, the containerised system is modular, allowing it to be specified, installed and replaced according to the requirements of different vessels and applications.

Fleetzero’s first commercial deployment is expected to enter service later this year. The project will incorporate 10 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery capacity as part of a broader vessel conversion to hybrid-electric propulsion.
