Alfa Laval, Advent collaborate on methanol fuel cells for marine sector

January 13, 2023

The companies will test Advent's methanol-fuelled high-temperature proton exchange membrane (HT-PEM) fuel cells as a source of auxiliary power for vessels.

“The HT-PEM technology can utilise low-cost and abundant hydrogen-carrier fuels, like methanol, e-methanol, and biomethanol,” says US-based fuel cell manufacturer Advent Energy.

According to Vasilis Gregoriou, chairman and chief executive of Advent Technologies, methanol is safer to handle than hydrogen and can be easily deployed on-site.

“Over the past months, we have received significant interest from the marine industry for our methanol-powered fuel cells. This gives us optimism about the future and our contribution to the industry’s goal of net zero by 2050,” he adds.

HT-PEM technology has significant maritime potential and will help to accelerate the sector’s decarbonisation, says Jeroen van Riel, business development manager for marine energy solutions at Swedish technology company Alfa Laval.
