The company has received approval to conduct ammonia testing at its Alfa Laval Test & Training Center, where tests would begin early next year.

It will explore ammonia’s behaviour in a wide range of systems including combustion systems, fuel supply systems and fuel cells, Alfa Laval’s vice president of technology development and energy systems Lars Skytte Jørgensen says.

Alfa Laval has previously carried out similar testing for LNG, biofuels and methanol in marine engines.

As ammonia can be compatible with both fuel cells and internal combustion engines, it is being touted as one of the most cost-effective zero-carbon fuels for shipping. Several shipowners and industry analysts expect it to play a pivotal role in decarbonising the industry.
