Alma collaborates with Ceres to develop LNG-fuelled SOFC system

Norwegian battery company Alma Clean Power (Alma) has partnered with UK-based Ceres to develop a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system fuelled by liquid natural gas (LNG).

The 80-kilowatt (KW) SOFC system will be developed and built by Alma, while the SOFC stacks will be provided by Ceres. SOFC is an electrochemical conversion device that produces electricity directly from oxidizing a fuel.

The system will be tested in Stord, Norway in 2024 before being transferred to a vessel for further testing.

Ceres’ solid oxide technology is “ideally suited to marine environments, including coastal, portside and offshore,” Alma says.

“Decarbonising marine, one of the hardest to abate industries, is a crucial challenge for the globe to meet its net zero ambitions. We are excited to be collaborating with Alma, to drive the transition to a greener future for shipping,” Ceres’ chief commercial officer Tony Cochrane says.
