Ammonia-powered bulk carrier design approved

Shipping classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) has granted an Approval in Principle (AiP) to a 210,000 dwt ammonia-powered Newcastlemax bulk carrier designed by China's Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company (DSIC).

“The award of this AiP is another important step toward the decarbonisation of the maritime industry, showing the feasibility of powering commercial vessels with zero-carbon solutions in the near future,” says LR's Li Tianxiang said.

Earlier this year, DSIC and Chinese shipping company COSCO received approvals from China Classification Society and DNV for a methanol-powered VLCC design.

DSIC is part of state-owned China State Shipbuilding Corporation, which controls most of the shipbuilders in China.
