Classification society Bureau Veritas has awarded an Approval in Principle (AIP) for LNG dual-fuelled very large crude carrier (VLCC), which is suitable for conversion to run on ammonia fuel.

The VLCC was jointly developed by Chinese shipbuilders China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES), Dalian Shipbuilding Industry (DSIC), oil major TotalEnergies and French membrane containment system designer GTT.

The vessel features an integrated GTT Mark III membrane containment technology, and a 9,000 to 14,000 cbm capacity storage tank, which is compatible with both LNG and liquid ammonia fuel.

Substantial efforts in research and development along with adoption of innovative technologies and alternative fuels are important steps needed to expedite decarbonisation of the shipping industry, Bureau Veritas says.
