Klaipeda’s LNG terminal is operated by KN Energies and offers a virtual liquefaction service, in which biomethane injected into the gas grid is mass-balanced and attributed to LNG cargoes through a book-and-claim certification system.
The terminal does not carry out physical liquefaction of biomethane. Instead, buyers receive certificates linking their LNG load to the renewable biomethane supplied into the grid.
The biomethane supplied by Cargill was virtually liquefied at the terminal and will be supplied by Avenir’s small-scale vessel as bunker fuel across the Baltic region.
