Azane receives approval for ammonia safety system

August 28, 2024

Norwegian ammonia firm Azane Fuel Solutions has obtained an approval in principle (AiP) from classification society DNV for its ammonia release mitigation system, a safety measure designed to limit ammonia emissions on ships.

It captures and contains ammonia leaks from fuel supply and engine systems, thereby ensuring that emissions remain below hazardous levels. This system will help to keep both the onboard crew and the environment safe, the company said.

This follows DNV’s previous approval of Azane’s floating bunkering terminal in 2022 and the issuance of the first safety permit for ammonia bunkering earlier this year.

The planned bunkering terminal, a stationary barge with a capacity of 650 mt of ammonia, is expected to handle up to 416 operations annually, primarily serving offshore supply vessels at Fjord Base in Florø.

This project is a collaboration between Azane and Yara Clean Ammonia, aiming to establish ammonia as a standard fuel in the shipping industry.
