Bio-LNG and bio-methanol made a comeback in Rotterdam in Q2 2024
Rotterdam’s LNG bunker sales increased by 13% in the second quarter of 2024, while bio-blended bunker sales dipped by 11%.

Changes in Rotterdam alternative fuel sales between Q1 and Q2 2024:
- Total bio-blended bunker sales down 28,000 mt to 234,000 mt
- Total LNG sales up 11,000 mt to 98,000 mt
Rotterdam's LNG bunker sales soared in Q2 2024, increasing for the second consecutive quarter. LNG bunker sales touched 98,000 mt in Q2 2024, an increase of 13% from the previous quarter and up by 35% from 73,000 mt sold in Q2 2023.
Around 950 mt of bio-methanol was sold in the second quarter of this year, marking the first volume sold this year.
Bio-LNG was sold for the first time since 2021. The Hapag-Lloyd ship Brussels Express was bunkered with 890 mt of bio-LNG in April.
Total bio-blended bunker sales stood at 234,000 mt in Q2 2024, down by 11% from the previous quarter. Bio-VLSFO remained the most popular bio-blend, accounting for 68% of the total biofuel volumes sold in Q2 2024. Bio-ULSFO ranked second at 15% of volumes sold, while bio-HSFO came in third at 14%. Demand was the least for bio-MGO (2%) and bio-MDO (1%).
By comparison, Rotterdam's bio-blended bunker sales were roughly 45% higher than Singapore's sales in Q2 2024. However, Rotterdam's Q2 LNG bunker sales were 28% lower than the 136,000 mt sold in Singapore.
