Denmark's Bornholm Bunker Hub plans to supply green fuels such as methanol and ammonia to more than 60,000 vessels that pass by the island of Bornholm and Port of Roenne near the Baltic Sea.

Over the past two years, Bornholm Bunker Hub has carried out a feasibility study to gauge the financial potential for supplying green fuels.

Bornholm Bunker Hub is a consortium of eight members from the energy sector, ferry services, technology industry, engine manufacturing, bunker supply, consulting, certification and port authority.

The group has found local fuel production through renewable sources such as hydro and wind energy as important factors to establish a competitive bunker hub.

Fuel production will be supported by the 2 GW wind farm at Bornholm that will be commissioned by 2030.

Bunker Holding is part of the consortium. Its chief commercial officer Christoffer Berg Lassen said they expect to see increasing demand for green fuels such as methanol and ammonia this decade.

Topsoe is also a partner. It has developed ammonia and methanol production technologies based on electricity from wind turbines and solar PV cells, including the world’s biggest ammonia plant project, Helios.

Other partners include Orsted, one of the world's biggest producers of renewable energy from offshore wind power.

The consortium is now engaging with other potential partners and customers.
