Bunker One’s chartered chemical tanker can carry biofuel blends up to B100 (100% biofuel) as well as methanol for bunkering, Petter Jonason, chief operating officer of Bunker One Sweden said.

Conventional bunker tankers - classified as Type I - are certified under MARPOL Annex I, which allows them to carry biofuel blends up to B30 (30% bio-component).

Higher blends (B30–B100) and fuels such as methanol fall under the IBC Code and MARPOL Annex II. Under IMO rules, vessels must be classified as Type II chemical tankers to transport them.

The company is investing in vessels that serve current demand and are prepared for future fuels. Its chemical tanker Sagafjord can also “be adapted” to carry ammonia in the future “with the right approvals,” Jonason said.

The vessel will mainly operate in Sweden and Denmark but will also make deliveries in Germany and the UK, Jonason added.
