BV approves IMODCO's ammonia transfer tech
Classification Society Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) has approved a range of jetty-less offshore transfer systems, developed by IMODCO Terminals.

The jetty-less offshore floating storage systems eliminate the need for traditional shore-connected jetties or piers to load or unload cargo such as ammonia and LNG, and they enable safe transfer of large volumes, BV stated.
The classification society has reviewed the designs of a portfolio of four solutions covering offshore units, buoys and mooring systems, which connect ammonia carriers to onshore ammonia refineries or storages via subsea pipelines.
“By moving the transfer away from the shoreline and traditional jetty terminals, the New Energy Terminals mitigate the risk of toxic ammonia leaks dispersing into populated areas,” BV said.
Ammonia is widely transported as cargo but is still rarely used as a marine fuel due to limited engine technology and its highly toxic nature, which demands strict safety measures. These transfer systems offer a safer way to handle and store ammonia, potentially paving the way for its future adoption as a low-emission marine fuel.
IMODCO Terminals is a subsidiary of Dutch offshore oil and gas company SBM Offshore.
