The scheme, called Clean Vessel Demonstration, is part of a larger federal initiative known as the Green Shipping Corridor Program.

Under this scheme, the government will allocate funding to projects that focus on building ships capable of running on alternative marine fuels, implementing shore power technologies, and promoting port decarbonisation.

One Canadian shipping company, Algoma Central, has been granted a total funding of CAD 597,500 ($436,900) for five of its projects. These projects include feasibility studies focused on designing a a methanol-capable vessel, the installation of wind-assisted propulsion on its vessels, retrofitting its vessels to use shore power and the use of biofuel as bunker fuel.

Other funded projects include feasibility studies to install fuel cells and wind propulsion systems on bulk carriers, shore power upgrades and retrofitting vessels to improve fuel efficiency.
