Canada's Hamilton-Oshawa port looks to green hydrogen to cut emissions

April 6, 2023

Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority (HOPA) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Ontario-based Atura Power to buy green hydrogen from the electricity provider's upcoming Niagara Hydrogen Centre.

Atura, a subsidiary of Canadian utility Ontario Power Generation, plans to bring the Niagara Hydrogen Centre online in early 2024. It is one of three green hydrogen facilities that Atura plans to build across Ontario and will be equipped with the province's first 20-megawatt electrolyser system, it said in October.

By purchasing green hydrogen from Atura, HOPA says it will be able to decarbonise its own and its customers' operations by providing the sustainable fuel across the port network, it now says in a statement.
