Hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) 100 is a biofuel made from vegetable oil treated with 100% diluted hydrogen. It is derived from used cooking oil, agricultural or livestock waste that has been pretreated to remove impurities, according to Cepsa.
It can reduce emissions by up to 90% on a well-to-wake basis, compared to conventional marine fuels, Cepsa claims.
Second-generation (2G) biofuels like HVO100 offer an “immediate” alternative to conventional marine fuels for reducing shipping emissions, Cepsa’s director of marine fuel solutions, Samir Fernández said. This is because they can be used in vessels without modifying the engines.
