Chemical tanker operator Chemship has placed an additional order for wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS) from Dutch wind-power company Econowind, to be installed on two of its vessels.

The tankers, Chemical Contender and Chemical Fighter, will each be fitted with four 16-metre rigid sails—also known as solid or wing sails—designed to harness wind energy and support propulsion. Installation is scheduled for the second half of 2026.
This follows the successful retrofit of Chemical Challenger in early 2024 in Rotterdam, which Econowind claims made it the world’s first chemical tanker equipped with wind-assisted ship propulsion technology.
