ClassNK approves OceanWings’ rigid wingsail systems

Japanese classification society ClassNK has granted Approval in Principle (AiP) to French maritime technology company OceanWings for its Rigid Fixed (RF) and Rigid Tiltable (RT) wingsail systems.

Wingsails are rigid, aerodynamic sails that harness wind to generate additional thrust and reduce a vessel’s fuel consumption.

The AiP clears the way for OceanWings to scale up the technology for larger vessel segments and a wider range of operating profiles. It also supports the integration of wind-assisted propulsion into both newbuild and retrofit projects.
