Classification society ClassNK has approved the design concept of a bulk carrier that can be converted from using conventional marine fuels to methanol-capable dual-fuel engine.

“This certification demonstrates the regulatory feasibility of the ship, serving as a meaningful step in advancing the transition of the existing fleet to alternative fuels,” ClassNK said.

Dual-fuel engines can run on both methanol as well as conventional marine fuels.
