The tugboats will be equipped with four high-speed dual-fuel hydrogen engines and modular storage systems for compressed hydrogen, ensuring secure storage below deck. Each tug can carry up to 16 hydrogen bottles, storing a combined total of 736 kg of pressurised hydrogen at 350 bar.
While primarily running on hydrogen, they can switch to conventional marine fuels if hydrogen isn't accessible and operate solely on conventional fuel if required.
The deal was signed last Thursday at the 27th International Tug & Salvage (ITS) Convention in Dubai.
On the same day, classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) gave approval to CMB.TECH’s dual-fuel hydrogen technology for implementation in the four tugboats to be constructed by Damen.
