Dutch vessel designer Conoship International has launched a fully electric version of its general cargo vessel, featuring a 40 MWh battery system.

The vessel can cruise up to 650 nautical miles at 8 knots, or 350 nautical miles at 10 knots on battery power, the company said.

Conoship has retained the existing hull form – directly translating into lower power demands per nautical mile and making large-scale battery storage feasible for short-sea operations, it said.

To eliminate the need for extra deadweight water ballast, the battery plant is distributed across dedicated forward and aft battery compartments, the company said.

While transiting routes with limited shore power infrastructure, the vessel offers an optional downsized generator running on biofuels and HVO.

“As infrastructure develops, and technology progresses, we expect more options to become available for (fully) electric solutions,” Conoship said.
