Singapore-based Consort Bunkers has placed an order with China-based COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry in Guandong to build four 7,999 dwt IMO Type 2 tankers. The vessels will be ready for biofuel and methanol bunkering.

An IMO type 2 chemical tanker is designed for transporting moderately hazardous chemicals according to International Maritime Organisation (IMO) standards.

The deal is part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Consort Bunkers, Tokyo-based classification society ClassNK, engine manufacturer Yanmar Asia and shipping equipment firm Taiko Asia Pacific to collaborate on providing more bunker vessels capable of handling alternative fuels.

Under the MoU, ClassNK will provide surveys and audits on alternative fuels, while Yanmar Asia will supply main engines as well as generator engines to Consort Bunkers' ships. Taiko Asia Pacific will offer technical support by providing equipment for engine and pump rooms.
