COP27: Amazon-backed Amogy inks ammonia deal after Amazon reiterates biofuel pledge

November 10, 2022

As part of the US-Norway Green Shipping Challenge at COP27 this week, Amazon reaffirmed its commitment to decarbonisation and signalled fresh demand for zero-carbon shipping.

US e-commerce and logistics giant Amazon set a self-imposed target last year to ship at least 10% of its goods on vessels using zero-emission fuels by 2030, and 100% by 2040.

Amazon-backed sustainable energy start-up Amogy has signed a collaboration agreement with Yara Clean, the clean ammonia production unit of fertiliser giant Yara International, one day after Amazon pledged to use bio-based bunker fuels on its cargo ships.

Amogy has developed a zero-carbon power system that uses ammonia as a fuel. In the system, liquid ammonia that is stored on ships is converted into pure hydrogen through a process called "ammonia cracking". Hydrogen can then be used in fuel cells or internal combustion engines.

The companies will work with shipowners to install Amogy's system on board, with Yara Clean providing green ammonia for bunkering.

According to the start-up, the collaboration is an essential step towards broader adoption of ammonia as a carbon-free fuel for the shipping industry and the global economy. Its chief executive Seonghoon Woo says, “this agreement provides a fantastic opportunity for Amogy to work alongside innovators in this space to support further demonstrations of our technology in maritime vessels.”

Amogy announced a partnership with Southern Devall in 2023 to deploy its technology on an ammonia tank barge.
