Greece has joined other European countries such as Denmark, France and Germany in targeting net-zero shipping by 2050.

A Greek project called Alternative Fuel Implementation in Igoumenitsa (ALFION) is already underway to transform the Ionian Sea port of Igoumenitsa into a major alternative fuel hub. Other ports have not yet been specified.

ALFION is co-financed by the EU's Connecting Europe Facility. A final study is being conducted into what infrastructure is needed to roll out shore power and supply of green fuels.

Along with shore power, Greece is looking to expand its electric vessel fleet. Earlier this year, Greek ferry company Saronic Ferries announced plans to launch its first fully electric ro-pax ferry by 2026.
