Corvus Energy and BYD develop marine battery system

Norwegian marine battery technology company Corvus Energy has partnered with China’s BYD Energy Storage to develop a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery energy storage system for tugs, workboats and ferries.

The new LFP system is designed for vessels where high-power output is more important than overall energy capacity. This makes it particularly suitable for tugs and workboats, offshore vessels that use batteries to optimize power consumption, and large ferries that need to recharge quickly between crossings.

Under the collaboration, BYD Energy Storage provides the battery-cell technology and manufacture the cell stacks. Corvus Energy handles the overall system design and architecture, including marine safety systems, battery management, cybersecurity and a digital battery passport. It will also be responsible for class approval, final assembly and testing.

The partnership builds on agreements signed by the two companies in December 2025 and May 2026, which established a framework for jointly developing marine battery systems using high-rate LFP technology. This is the first LFP storage system to be produced by this partnership.
