Countdown to MEPC 80: MMMCZCS supports net-zero by 2050 with incremental targets
The IMO must adopt interim targets for 2030 and 2040 and implement them "no later than 2028", says Danish industry non-profit Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping (MMMCZCS).

The shipping sector's well-to-wake greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions must peak before 2025, then decline by 45% by 2030 and reach net-zero by 2050, compared to 2010 levels, it underlines.
MMMCZCS is also urging the IMO to establish a clear "checkpoint" for 2040, despite disagreements among members about the goals. Some countries have proposed a 96% reduction in GHG emissions versus 2008 levels, others a 50% reduction and yet others have advocated for not setting interim targets altogether.
The shipping sector's GHG emissions needs to decline further and “continue to reach net-negative CO2 levels to compensate for historic emissions," MMMCZCS argues.
The report also called on the IMO to adopt guidelines for lifecycle assessments (LCAs) of fuels as a tool to assist shipping to cut its carbon footprint throughout the fuel production and supply chain.
