Numerous advancements in green shipping technologies or fuels have already been made, however, a highly competent and trained workforce is needed to ensure a sustainable energy transition in shipping, ITF said in its proposal to the IMO.
To meet upcoming challenges related to decarbonisation, seafarers and the maritime workforce will require to equip themselves with appropriate education, training, and qualifications. “Provision of proper education and training is critical to produce professional and competent personnel to operate on ships with advanced technology as well as to contribute to environmental protection and safety at sea,” it stated in the proposal.
The association has requested to include a provision for financial support for seafarers’ training and education in the revised IMO GHG strategy.
According to a recent report released by the classification society DNV, at least 1.8 million seafarers will require training to handle alternative fuels in the event of net-zero shipping by 2050.
