Cunard currently has three luxury ships in its fleet – Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mary 2, and Queen Victoria. A fourth one – Queen Anne – is set to debut in May 2024. All four ships will be able to plug into shore power, said the cruise operator Carnival Corporation.

Shore power technology allows docked ships to connect directly to a land-based power source, allowing ships to switch off the onboard engines and operate on electricity sourced entirely from the local electrical grid.

“The ability for the ships to plug into local grids already exists at many key ports, including Queen Mary 2’s homeport at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal and Queen Anne’s homeport in Southampton, England,” said the company.
