Classification society DNV will provide technical assistance and a design approval for the rotor sail system, which will be developed by the South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME).
They will also conduct a study on a wind assisted propulsion system for deep-sea vessels such as LNG carriers and VLCCs.
DSME is currently working on a prototype of its rotor sail system, which is expected to be ready by next month.
Rotor sails can reduce a ship's fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by harnessing wind power. This is done with a rotating cylindrical column on the deck of the ship that generates additional thrust for its propulsion system.
