Built for China Merchants Shipping, the vessel can carry about 2.1 million bbls of crude oil and is fitted with a domestically manufactured methanol dual-fuel engine that can operate on both methanol and conventional marine fuels.

This marks “the world's first methanol dual-fuel VLCC to officially enter commercial service,” according to China Classification Society (CCS).

Details of the vessel’s deployment have not been disclosed.

The global methanol-capable fleet currently consists of 97 vessels, with another 366 scheduled for delivery by 2030, DNV data shows. Most of the vessels on order are container ships, followed by bulk carriers and tankers.
