The Danish government has secured broad parliamentary support to join the Multinational Military Mission for the Strait of Hormuz (MMMSoH), led by the UK and France.

Denmark-based shipowners’ association, Danish Shipping, has given “full support” to the initiative, it said in a statement.

In April, the UK and France convened military officials from over 30 nations to coordinate efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, following a wave of attacks on commercial vessels in the critical shipping lane.

Denmark will contribute a range of assets to the mission, including an interpreting unit, drone capabilities, staff officers, and a cyber component, according to its defence minister Jeppe Bruus.

Danish Shipping has urged the mandate should also include the Red Sea, “where sailing has long been unsafe due to Houthi attacks on civilian shipping in the area.”

The Danish government is now expected to present a parliamentary resolution on Danish participation in MMMSoH, which will be fast-tracked in the Danish Parliament, Danish Shipping said.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a precarious geopolitical flashpoint, as Iran continues to use the threat of closing the waterway as leverage to dictate the terms of its ongoing negotiations.

Despite the US lifting its blockade, global shipowners remain deeply sceptical, choosing to keep their vessels at a distance until they see sustained, verifiable evidence of both safety and diplomatic stability.
