Both vessels can run on liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied biogas (LBG) or diesel.
The 22,500-dwt tankers will also be equipped with 500-kilowatt hour (kWh) battery pack for additional power, shore power capability and a waste heat recovery system. The system will utilise waste heat from the main engine to generate additional power, thereby improving the vessel's fuel efficiency.
The two vessels are expected to be delivered in the second and fourth quarters of 2025.
The newbuilds will enable the company “to achieve cleaner and more efficient operations,” Donsötank says.
However, the main component of both LNG and LBG is methane, thus, methane slip remains a key concern as uncombusted methane has about 86 times higher global warming potential than carbon dioxide (CO2) over a 20-year period.
