Dorian LPG places order for three LPG dual-fuel vessels

Gas carrier owner Dorian LPG has ordered three 90,000-cbm LPG dual-fuel very large gas carriers (VLGCs) from South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean.

The newbuilds will be capable of running on LPG as well as conventional marine fuels. Each vessel will be equipped with a shaft generator, which converts the rotational energy of the propeller shaft into electricity for onboard use.

The three VLGCs are scheduled for delivery in June, September and December 2030, respectively.

Dorian LPG has not disclosed further details about the vessels, including their intended trade routes or deployment plans.

The move follows an order the owner placed with South Korea’s HD Hyundai in June for an LPG dual-fuel VLGC.

The global fleet of LPG-capable vessels currently stands at 179 ships, with a further 160 vessels scheduled for delivery by 2030. Of the existing fleet, 165 ships are dedicated LPG carriers, while the remaining 14 can transport both LPG and ammonia, according to classification society DNV.
