The vessel is capable of running on both LPG and conventional marine fuels and is also designed to transport ammonia alongside LPG. It was constructed by South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean Heavy Industries.
Areion will begin service under charter with the Helios LPG Pool, a joint venture controlled by Dorian LPG and MOL group company MOL Energia.
Dorian LPG has not disclosed where the vessel will be deployed.
Equipped with shore power capability, the vessel can conduct all port operations entirely on shore power wherever cold ironing facilities are available.
The global fleet of LPG-capable vessels currently stands at 145, with a further 89 vessels expected to be delivered by 2028. Of the existing fleet, 142 are LPG carriers, while three vessels are designed to carry both LPG and ammonia, according to DNV.
