Dual-fuel vessels to account for 26% of Seaspan’s TEU capacity by 2029

Dual-fuel vessels are expected to account for approximately 26% of Seaspan Corporation’s total TEU capacity by 2029, the shipowner said in its latest sustainability report.

Dual-fuel ships represented around 20% of Seaspan’s fleet at the end of 2025. The fleet included 27 LNG dual-fuel vessels.

Seaspan expects to take delivery of 20 additional LNG dual-fuel containerships before 2030. It is also due to receive six dual-fuel pure car and truck carriers by 2028.

Seaspan is already converting five 10,000 TEU vessels chartered by Hapag Lloyd from conventional fuel to methanol dual-fuel systems in 2026.

Four newbuild methanol dual-fuel vessels are also scheduled to join Seaspan’s fleet in 2027 and 2028.

Seaspan is separately developing a 15,000 TEU ammonia dual-fuel containership in partnership with the Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping.

The company is also exploring the potential use of nuclear propulsion in containerships through partnerships with Lloyd’s Register and LucidCatalyst, the report said.
