The study will be focused on technologies that can harness solar and wind power on vessels and reduce their fossil fuel consumption. It will explore ways to make vessels more energy efficient, which include propeller modifications and energy-efficient electrical devices.
Eco Marine Power’s solar power system is currently being installed on one of the UAE-based company’s vessels for performance analysis. Japanese battery company Furukawa Battery and technology firm KEI System are also part of the study.
Initially, the study will concentrate on a single-geared Handymax bulk carrier, and it will later explore implementation across a fleet “that may lead to improvements in vessel energy efficiency plus lower operational costs and improve safety.”
