Industrial grade means the fuel has a confirmed purity level above 99.85%, European Energy said.

“The e-methanol is compliant with the methanol industry-standard IMPCA specifications,” it added.

To meet International Methanol Producers and Consumers Association (IMPCA) quality standards, the methanol has to be tested for properties such as chloride, sulphur, hydrocarbons, acidity and volatility.

Recently, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published its first edition of global standards for using methanol as a marine fuel, which were largely based on IMPCA specifications.

“The production of industry-grade e-methanol at the intended quality level confirms that the technology is functioning as designed,” said René Alcaraz Frederiksen, chief executive of Solar Park Kassø, which owns the plant.
