Everllence completes ethanol-capable engine testing in South Korea

German engine manufacturer Everllence (formerly known as MAN Energy Solutions) has successfully tested and verified its ethanol-capable engine at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Engine and Machinery division in South Korea.

The engine will be installed on the third of 10 very large ore carriers ordered by Shandong Shipping for chartering to Brazilian mining and logistics company Vale. The vessel is scheduled for delivery in early 2027.

The test follows a partnership agreement between Everllence and Vale in February to develop an ethanol-powered engine based on Everllence’s two-stroke, dual-fuel platform.

“This marks a major milestone for the G80 engine platform, transforming it into a fully flexible tri-fuel engine capable of operating on fuel oil, methanol, ethanol, or any blend of the latter two,” Everllence’s head of two-stroke business Bjarne Foldager said.

“We foresee the core demand for this engine coming from bulk carriers, tankers and container vessels,” Everllence’s vice president, head of global sales & promotion, two-stroke business Christian Ludwig added.
