German engine maker Everllence (formerly MAN Energy Solutions) has successfully operated its 90-bore methanol dual-fuel engine on ethanol in Japan.

The company first introduced this engine in the methanol-carrier segment and later scaled it up in 2021 with the first installation on a vessel outside that segment. Building on this progress, the successful ethanol operation now gives Everllence a fully proven engine platform to demonstrate ethanol capabilities.

At present, Everllence has 225 methanol dual-fuel engines on order for newbuilds and already more than 50 engines in operation.

“The successful conclusion of running in Japan means that we are now significantly closer to offering ethanol as a retrofit product, especially for the S90 engines already equipped with ME-LGIM technology,” Michael Petersen, Senior Vice President and Head of PrimeServ Denmark at Everllence, said.
