Everllence, Vale partner on ethanol engine
German engine manufacturer Everllence, formerly known as MAN Energy Solutions, has teamed up with Brazilian mining major Vale to develop an ethanol-powered engine based on Everllence’s two-stroke, dual-fuel platform.

The project aims to offer a viable alternative to traditional fossil-fuel engines by lowering carbon emissions and supporting life-cycle neutrality — meaning net-zero emissions across a fuel’s full journey, from production through end use.
Ethanol brings additional environmental advantages. It contains no sulphur, has low toxicity, is biodegradable, and dissolves readily in water. Because it remains liquid at standard temperatures and pressures, it can be handled using conventional bunkering and onboard fuel systems without major modifications, Everllence said.
Everllence has already demonstrated progress with ethanol technology. In September 2025, it successfully operated a 90-bore, two-stroke engine on ethanol across all load ranges during trials in Japan. In December 2025, it reported similar results with a four-stroke dual-fuel engine tested at its facilities in Denmark, confirming stable performance at all load points.
