The ferry, Dokter Wagemaker, was bunkered with an unspecified amount of B20 biofuel blend via ship-to-ship (STS) transfer in Texel, a company spokesperson told ENGINE.
The B20 biofuel blend comprised a blend of 20% HVO-based biofuel and 80% ultra-low-sulfur diesel (ULSD). The biofuel component is produced from feedstocks, which are “certified as 100% waste or residue and are approved by an independent sustainability board.”
“For the sustainable biofuel component (20%) we expect a well-to-exhaust CO2 reduction of 80-90%,” the spokesperson added.
FincoEnergies considers biofuels as a “fast and effective solution for decarbonising the maritime sector. They require (almost) no technical changes to the fuel infrastructure or the engine.”
“Adding sustainable biofuels, in this case, HVO, is a significant step toward reducing CO2 emissions,” TESO’s head of technical services Marc Bakker says.
