Fuel Switch Snapshot: LBM becomes sweeter in Rotterdam

April 14, 2025

B100 price rises in Rotterdam

Rotterdam’s LBM now $180-315/mt cheaper than VLSFO

All bunker prices mentioned below have been adjusted for calorific contents to make them VLSFO-equivalent. They have estimated EU compliance costs for EU–EU voyages included. These account for EU ETS costs and FuelEU Maritime penalties, and our estimated compliance surplus values for FuelEU pooling. Rotterdam's B100 and LBM prices also factor in Dutch HBE rebates for advanced liquid and gaseous biofuels sold in the Netherlands.

Rotterdam’s B100 has shifted to a slight $3/mt premium over its HSFO in the past week.

LNG’s premium over VLSFO in Rotterdam has narrowed by $29/mt to $109/mt. The premium has also tightened further against LSMGO, shrinking by $36/mt to just $3/mt.

Rotterdam’s liquefied biomethane (LBM) price has dropped by $31/mt over the past week. It is now $249–289/mt cheaper than LNG, depending on the engine’s methane slip.

For dual-fuel shipowners, LBM now stands at a $315/mt discount to VLSFO in Rotterdam, when used in ships with diesel slow-speed (0.2% methane slip) engines.

For ships equipped with Otto medium-speed (3.1% methane slip) engines, LBM is $180/mt cheaper than VLSFO.

Liquid fuels

Rotterdam’s VLSFO benchmark has risen by $7/mt in the past week, almost tracking a $4/mt gain in front-month ICE Brent futures.

VLSFO supply in the wider ARA region has been tight, with lead times of around 5–7 days recommended.

The B100 price in the port has increased by $20/mt over the past week. PRIMA Markets assessed the Dutch HBE rebate for B100 at $388/mt on Friday, up $11/mt from the previous week.

Singapore’s VLSFO benchmark has mirrored Brent’s $4/mt increase.

Liquid gases

Rotterdam’s LNG bunker price has dropped by $22/mt in the past week, mainly due to a 3% decline in the front-month Dutch TTF Natural Gas contract.

This price drop has been driven by “bearish fundamentals and ongoing tariff concerns,” according to Energi Danmark.

Singapore’s LNG price has declined by a modest $7/mt.
