Fujairah to get hybrid electric bunker barge in 2025

Dubai-based maritime and logistics firm Tristar Group has placed an order for a hybrid electric bunker barge with Turkey’s Akdenix Shipyard.

The bunker barge will be commissioned by early 2025, and will be used to deliver bunker stems in the UAE port of Fujairah. It will have a carrying capacity of 750 cbm.

The vessel will be equipped with batteries for propulsion along with diesel generators as a power backup. Unlike conventional-fuelled barges, the hybrid electric bunker barge will not be equipped with a funnel. The new design will help save onboard space to accommodate a battery system.

The diesel generators will serve as a power backup option to electric power. The generators will be placed in a way to discharge flue gases underwater.
