Under the agreement, Gas and Heat will work on the basic design of the system, while RINA will ensure that the design complies with regulations as part of the Approval in Principle (AiP) process.

Global shipping sector accounts for nearly 3% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. To address this, the sector has been given targets to reduce GHG emissions. Ammonia is a viable solution to reduce shipping emissions and has the potential to play a crucial role in the medium term, the companies stated. Major engine manufacturers have already researched the ammonia combustion process, and German engine manufacturer MAN ES aims to launch a two-stroke ammonia engine this year.

“The agreement represents a further step in this direction, allowing the integration of know-how and the delivery to the shipping industry of those technical insights and solutions that are much needed in this time of change, “Marine Italy Technical Director at RINA Giuseppe Zagaria commented.
