Gibraltar bunker calls shoot up to record high in May

The Port of Gibraltar recorded 599 bunker calls in May, the highest monthly total on record, the port authority data shows.

Port of Gibraltar has data available for bunker calls since January 2011.

This was a 12% increase from the 533 bunker calls recorded in April, and a 5% increase compared to May last year, when 573 vessels bunkered in Gibraltar.

Bunker calls usually shoot up in the summer due to increased cruise demand. But notably, the number of ships calling at Gibraltar slipped from 34 in April to 24 in May.

Shipping agents have reported increased congestion in Gibraltar recently and credited that to an influx of vessels.
