NYK Bulkship is already part of a separate consortium with Japan’s Sumitomo and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) to develop a newbuild ammonia bunker vessel for deployment at the port.
It has now signed a preliminary non-binding agreement with Golden Island and Norway-based producer Yara Clean Ammonia (YCA) to supply low-carbon ammonia for physical bunkering operations in Singapore.
YCA will produce both blue and green ammonia and arrange deliveries to the port. The company signed a long-term charter agreement last year with Navigator Amon Shipping for two new ammonia-capable gas carriers, each with a capacity of 51,000 cbm.
Golden Island will deliver stems to vessels in line with applicable regulatory and safety requirements.
The partners have not disclosed a timeline for first deliveries. But the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore has said it plans to pilot ammonia bunkering this year.
Singapore is a “natural starting point for scaling ammonia bunkering globally”, given its strategic location and position as the world’s largest bunkering hub, the partners said.
