Hafnia and Wärtsilä partner to retrofit 10 tankers with fuel-saving propulsion systems

Singapore-based shipping company Hafnia has partnered with Finnish engine maker Wärtsilä to retrofit 10 of its tankers with new propulsion systems to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

The ships will be fitted with two systems to improve water flow around the propeller.

They will also have an energy-saving propeller unit that reduces underwater noise. This will lower emissions, improve the ships' Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) ratings, and attract better rates from charterers, Wärtsilä said.

“There are many benefits to be gained by improving the operating efficiency of our vessels’ propulsion systems and we look forward to having these innovative Wärtsilä solutions installed,” executive vice president of technical at Hafnia Ralph Juhl said.

Wärtsilä plans to deliver the new equipment over a period of two years starting 2024.

This retrofit project reflects the growing interest of the maritime industry in investing in fuel-saving technologies.
