Hanwha Ocean unveils its ammonia-propelled LNG carrier

South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean has introduced a new LNG carrier concept, named Ocean 1, which features an electric propulsion system powered by an ammonia gas turbine.

The LNG carrier can also be co-fired with LNG, meaning it can generate electricity by burning a mix of LNG and ammonia. Additionally, the vessel is designed with the flexibility to incorporate fuel cell and battery technology in the future.

This concept was introduced last week at the Gastech Exhibition and Conference 2024 in Houston, US.
